Philosophy

Matthews original intent on getting into the wine business was to create a flagship Bordeaux blend. The Red Wine has always been a benchmark in Washington state and beyond. Consistently using all five Bordeaux varietals. Matthews has been producing Cabernet Sauvignon driven wines with all of the power and elegance that made the Paulliac and St. Estephe regions famous, with the added intensity of Columbia Valley fruit.

Winemaking

Upon arrival in the cellar, each of the vineyard lots and grape varietals are kept separate during fermentation.  Each lot is then pressed into 100% new French oak for maturing.  During the 18 to 20 months of aging, the wine is closely monitored in the lab and evaluated every two weeks by our Winemaker.  As bottling time approaches, lots may be blended according to what will complement the final wine.  By the end of barrel aging, only the best lots are added into the final blend.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes

The 1995 harvest brought us wine with perfect balance right from the vine.  This blend using the noble Bordeaux varietals, is our signature wine and is the only wine produced by Matthews Cellars.  The wine is medium to full bodied with rich velvety skin and barrel tannins and a long clean finish.  Although enjoyable now, this wine is loaded with everything needed to carry it for at least the next seven to ten years in the bottle.
